Photoshop Tips and Tricks #2: Fire
I came up with this trick while playing with Photoshop filters, and since I don’t use plug-ins or have the latest version of Photoshop, this came in pretty handy for me. Who knows? It might come in handy for you, too.
- Create a New file. [Ctrl-N/Command-N]
- Render Clouds. [Filter > Render > Clouds]
- Distort using Ocean Ripple. [Filter > Distort > Ocean Ripple]
- Duplicate layer. [Layer > Duplicate Layer]
- Stylize the top layer with Glowing Edges. [Filter > Stylize > Glowing Edges]
- Set the layer mode to Screen. [See drop-down menu in the Layers Palette]
- Merge the layer Down with the one right below it. [Ctrl-E/Command-E]
- Colorize with red and increase contrast.
- Adjust Hue/Saturation, Colorize with a reddish hue. [Ctrl-U/Command-U, make sure Colorize is checked and Saturation is set to at least 45]
- Adjust Curves to increase contrast. [Ctrl-M/Command-M, lighten the highlights and darken the shadows]
(what your curve should look like)
- Duplicate layer.
- Adjust Hue/Saturation to make the top layer yellowish. [Slide the Hue option until you get yellow tones.]
- Set layer mode to Lighten.
- Merge layers down.
- Duplicate layer.
- Use Plastic Wrap filter on top layer. [Filter > Artistic > Plastic Wrap]
- Set layer mode to Overlay
And voila, you have fire!

Now that is totally bueno! (Such talent) It almost makes me wish I had Photoshop!
Almost.
I Use PaintShop Pro because it was intuitively easier to learn and more wallet friendly for us non-professional types.
Well, I do have Photoshop, and one of these days I’m going to run through all your tutorials and see what kind of mess I can create. 🙂
I love these!
Brilliant! You are so wonderfully talented, hon. 🙂
Oooh, do we get to learn how to create the other elements (water, earth, metal, wood) in the next class?
😀
See? There you go again! Thanks! You are the most talented and generous tipster I know….
Tooooo cool! What a way to come back from an offline sabatical!
oooh! i know how to make fire too. open cover. remove match….
wow! that looks great and you’re great explaining, thank you! 🙂
How nice. I’ll just have to try that nifty little tip. You’re just full of cool ideas. Thanks for sharing. It looks great.
Ditto what Minnie said about other elements. I’m just curious.
This is such a nifty tutorial. I cannot believe the results it got me. Thanks. 🙂
I came to this amazing, visual delight of a journal via Minnie’s Journal. Keep up the marvelous work.
Now that, friends, is how to make fire! An awesome tutorial, and you end up with quite possibley the best fire effect possible in PS.
awsome fire effect…know how to get it done in photoshop 7 ??? i had troubles dupicating it
Should be the same thing in Photoshop 7. All the features and filters mentioned are still there in the new version.
This tutorial was HOT and accurate. I know alot about Photoshop but didn’t know how to make fire EASILY. I did it the tedious, hard way.lol. Out with the old.. in with the new. For the records.. i think photoshop 6 is better than 7. 7 just has more filters etc etc. But as far as navigation, i like 6. For the people that can’t afford these expensive Adobe Programs.. You can download them from http://www.klitesite.com (for personal learning only though.. not for business.. but shhh.. you didn’t hear this from me. hehehee.)
Very good!!! Been wanting to know how for a very long time. May GOD bless you.
At step 7, I don’t seem to be getting the same sharp image as in the diagram. what am i doing wrong?
Oh, i found the problem. i made the clouds darker by messing with curves. it’s fixed now
lol it looks like i have another problem. when i merge the red and yellow pics in step 12, only the yellow one is shown, and it wasn’t effected at all. What’s going on?
oops! it was there all along. i was just looking at both layers. sorry i’ll shut up now lol
Hi, Mark!
I’m sorry I didn’t get back to you right away and answer your questions, but it looks like you’re doing just fine anyway. 🙂
