Two Guys, a Girl, and a Coffee Break
Life is good when you can have fun at work.
A month or two ago, a couple of the guys in the art department and I decided to enrich our lives by having a little more fun, more motivation, more relaxation, and more exercise. We started walking around the block during our 15-minute breaks.
Most of the time, it’s just the three of us, but we always try to get some of the other people in our department to come along. Lately, we’ve gotten a regular fourth to come with us at least three or four times a week, and she adds to the conversation as she keeps our numbers even.
Another recent addition to the walks: a scooter. One of the guys brought it from home, and we all take turns on it, even our regular fourth, who claims to be too old to be using the thing. We’ve also started taking along a little Nerf-like football, which we throw to each other in long or short passes when we’re not on the scooter.
Take it for granted, then, that our walks are even more fun than before. This gives us more selling points to make when trying to get other people to join us. And today, we finally got the one person we’ve really, most sincerely been trying to get to join us, the one we knew could most benefit from a tried and true break from the workday.
It was the best walk yet. We came back feeling motivated and energetic, even more productive than before, and truly appreciative of the air-conditioned room.
It makes me wonder what other people do on their coffee breaks. Is there anyone out there who does anything other than drink coffee or have a smoke?

Breaks? Breaks? I work at home and don’t get breaks. Where do you walk? I would almost move there just to get a ride on the scooter. I remember nerf footballs. Okay, that does it. I am definitely going to start breaking tomorrow…and I won’t waste my time on coffee.
When I was working at the advertising agency, we used to unwind in the coffee breaks by … bowling!
Someone had stored 9 empty cans of Pringles chips; they’d be used as makeshift bowling pins. And, an old beachball that was lying in the store-room, would be used to hit them with.
Of course, this wasn’t a daily or regular feature, but it was fun nevertheless. π
How uncanny! The guys and I go bowling for real every other Thursday during lunch hour. π
I like to go into one of empty offices, turn off all the lights (they have a window), shut the door and either relax or read. When I come back, most of the murderous thoughts about my users are gone. π
I live near the offices of the Department of Transportation of my state. Since these people are virulently pro-automobile, I’ve been surprised to see lots of badge-wearing office workers strolling in twos and threes around the neighborhood all day. It’s obviously a "program" of some kind, since there are too many of them for it to be spontaneous. Maybe the non-smokers take walking breaks when the smokers take smoke breaks? Anyway, I hope it spreads.
(I mostly see them during my own daily walk, about an hour to a coffee shop and back for exercise, caffeination and a bit of social interaction. I, too, work from home.)
Just the usual: ritual mass suicides in the name of the Lovecraftian Eldfer Gods. Stuff like that. Weβre boring.
Nothing special. I just sit in the library. I should know where every book is, in there. (Not that I read when I go to the library. I’ve just spent lots of time there, in-between classes.)
