Taking a Short Break to Write Something

Taking a Short Break to Write Something

I don’t know how I continue to let days and weeks go by without writing something here. I’m busier than I think, I guess. My to do list hovers around 100 items still undone (95 at the time of this writing), and these are all work related—covers or ads, mostly, and there are so many because a few of my publishers are really, really great about giving me plenty of lead time. I’ve already got cover requests for October releases, and some of my ads aren’t due until December, thank goodness!

Still, I’ve been playing catch up since the holidays, working on stuff that’s more immediately due, which is hard to do when I get handed rush work on a regular basis. The rush work is killer, as it forces me to put off projects that people were nice enough to hand to me early and pay me very well for them, too. I have gone above and beyond every now and then, pulling miracles out of my ass, and sometimes, it gets to the point where people expect that as a matter of course every single time, not realizing that when my ass runs out of miracles, the only thing left is crap.

It has always ever been this way, even when I had a day job working at a more corporate environment. I would do the work of 3-5 people for small pay, and my overpaid boss would look at me and tell me I’m not doing enough. Oy.

I’m so glad I’m in a position where I can turn work away if I feel it’s too much work and not enough pay. Just because I no longer have to commute, it doesn’t mean I should have to sit at my computer all day, not if I can help it.

Anyway, the cat is feeling back to her old self, thanks to the shot of cortisone. She’s able to run up and down the stairs again, and she gets her playful moments as well.

I’ll post more covers another time, when I can.

  1. Good to read some posts from you of late. And even better to hear that your business is going so well. I’m sure that is a pretty satisfying feeling.

And how about that hair? Any changes?

  2. Thank you, Warren! Long time no see! 🙂

Drew, no changes to my hair — it’s down to my ankles when wet. 🙂

  3. First off, Happy Birthday!! Is it today? I hope that you are getting to do something special.

And your hair is down to your ankles? I was thinking it used to reach down to your calves so I guess it is still growing a little bit. I wonder if it will ever reach the floor? You really do have ‘Crystal Gayle’ long hair. Do you remember her? Country music singer from the ’80s. Anyway, it’s pretty cool that you’ve resisted cutting your hair all this time.

You should still post some new pics sometime though 🙂

  4. Happy (belated?) Birthday, April!

… and nice to hear you hair is still long… keep it growing!

  5. Drew, it was on the 9th, so when you wished me a happy birthday, you had the right day. 🙂 As for the hair, it’s not so much that I’ve been resisting cutting it; it’s more that I’m too lazy to cut it.

    Thanks, JJ! 🙂

Darr, it’s one of those things on my non-written to-do list. 😉

  6. Maybe you need to come up with a ‘written’ list of non-work things to do. Updating the blog more often and posting a couple of pictures of your hair that is down to your ankles could be high on this list!

  7. Maybe I’m missing something but your hair hangs to almost your ankles? Really? No offense, but I think that would be terribly annoying to have hair that long. It would always be in the way and be getting caught in stuff like car doors. What’s the advantage compared to hair that’s waist length?
