I’m a Bad, Bad Girl

I’m a Bad, Bad Girl

Wow, have I neglected this site or what?

I’ve been working, mostly, thinking virtuous thoughts about updating but never really getting around to it. The intent was there, but the follow-through played hooky, which makes me a bad, bad girl.

The work has been great, though. I’ve had a lot of it, though I haven’t posted any of it here. Then, of course, there’s the computer situation. My PC, where I used to do all my updating, is close to having its warranty run out, and I suppose that’s akin to its having a terminal illness—though I haven’t actually set up any kind of network that would support terminals. What I mean to say is that it’s probably dying or at the very least ready for retirement because it moves as slowly as a nonagenarian on the freeway when I try to work on it.

So I’ve been on my Mac, and gradually I’ve been migrating the PC half of my work here and setting things up for a permanent stay. I thought about replacing the PC with another PC, but that would be like replacing George W. Bush with John McCain, and do I really want to do that? Hell, no.

So now I guess you know I’m for Barack Obama, and in fact, I’ve already voted. As I mentioned before, I like the way he runs his campaign. He surrounds himself with capable people, he remains calm and cool in times of crisis, and he does things proactively, with a lot of thought behind his actions, while he also responds quickly to anything that comes up unexpectedly. That is how I expect a president to run a country.

McCain, on the other hand … good God. As a presidential candidate he has just one big opportunity to show what kind of decision maker he’d be, and he completely failed in my eyes. He chose Sarah Palin, whom he didn’t even properly vet, and she turned out to be the worst possible choice he could make. If she were running for president—and essentially she is, given the fact that McCain is ever so much older than my dying PC, not to mention the warranty on him already ran out a million years ago, back when the internet was made up of tubes—she would be the very last person I would pick. I know that some conservative men are totally ga-ga over her, but I don’t store my brain between my legs and see her mostly as a moose-killing grifter who wants every other woman, especially one who shares her DNA, to suffer all the same things she did, and much, much more.

And I didn’t get my information from e-mail forwards like most McCain/Palin supporters do because I’m just not the sort of person who can easily believe that some Nigerian prince will send me tons of money if I give him my bank information or that some online store that sells Photoshop for $25 is totally and completely legal.

If I seem a little harsh in my criticism of the Republican candidates it’s because I’m so frustrated and bewildered that the polls are even as close as they are. I can’t imagine how after eight years of Bush anyone would even consider McCain. I was frustrated and bewildered in 2000, too, because I couldn’t see why the Bush/Gore polls were so close either; I couldn’t figure out why anyone would even consider Bush! He’s a guy you could have a beer with, people said, and I thought well, yeah! He’s an alcoholic; of course, you can have a beer or five thousand with him. But why the hell would anyone want a president like that? He’d just ruin the country, get it into some kind of war, or put it in debt.

And voila.

I have no idea why people think presidents should be like the average joe, with mediocre intelligence, no achievements worthy of mentioning, and no actual management skills. I’m a smart girl, and I’m fairly capable in a lot of things, but I want someone at least 10 times smarter than me to be running the country. I wouldn’t want to run the country myself, and I wouldn’t want anyone like me to run the country. I don’t know; I’m just not as narcissistic as Joe Six-Pack, I guess.

So anyway, I’ve said far more than I wanted to. I’m just here to say that I’m still alive and kicking my PC to hell and back. I’m a total Mac convert now—no more straddling the fence. And I’m considering re-registering as a Democrat instead of leaving that party affiliation field blank.

  1. I have Mac envy. And just imagine the frustration when you get those e-mail forwards from family members for whom you actually want to maintain a healthy respect … and I’m not even American.

  2. Ohhh, Kat, you would totally love the Mac. I have always loved the Mac, but since doing more of my work on here, I have fallen even more deeply in love with it. I am especially in love with Apple Mail right now. I’d been using Thunderbird until recently.

As for the e-mails, H.E. and I get them a lot from our more conservative family and friends. He used to debunk every one of them, school everyone addressed in the e-mail that this or that is false, with links to news sites on what’s true, but after a while even he got tired of doing that because the same people just kept sending the same kind of e-mail spreading all kinds of ridiculous rumors about Obama. There’s just no end to the willful ignorance.

Goodness, if the entire world could vote, Obama would win by a landslide. Foreigners keep better track of American news and politics than even most Americans do, even those Americans who consider themselves “real” Americans.

  3. Let me preface this by saying I intend to vote for Obama, but I don’t think you are giving John McCain nearly enough credit. I think George W has done a terrible job as President and I agree with a lot of what you said about the far right and their crazy talk and about Joe Six Pack and how education is somehow phrased as a negative.

But I believe McCain is a moderate Republican and would do a good job as President. I don’t think he would be like George W. I think he would be much more independent. I think he might have more problems with his base than with working with the Democrats. I think his biggest mistake was taking Sarah Palin as his VP but in truth I don’t know what he could’ve done to actually win the election. If Hillary had come thru on the Democratic side and the banking crises hadn’t occurred then I think he would’ve had a chance. But beating Obama was going to extremely tough and the banking crises basically ended his hopes. Just my opinion.

  4. Oh yes, and welcome back to your blog. I missed your posts and was pleasantly surprised to see a new one!!!

Sounds like things are going well for you. Anything new? I guess you still have all your hair? You could have done something pretty cool with your hair for Halloween I bet…..like some Princess Leia side buns.

  5. Drew, don’t get me wrong. I liked McCain in 2000 and hoped he would beat Bush at the primaries so that it would be a more interesting race between him and Gore, but McCain then and McCain now are two very different creatures. In other words, I don’t think I was hard enough on him in this post at all.

He might not be Bush, but he could potentially be as bad or worse. For one, he surrounds himself with lobbyists, so I don’t think he’d lead with the people’s interests in mind but with the major corporations in mind. Second, the last time there was bad economic mojo was before I was politically aware, but it had to do with S&Ls (Savings and Loan) failing, cheating a lot of little old ladies out of their retirement money, and the Keating Five were instrumental in that; guess who was one of the Keating Five? John McCain. So I don’t believe he’d be great for the economy AT ALL. Third, throughout his campaign he has contradicted himself countless times, making him a hypocrite, and I could name more of what I don’t like about him, but just thinking about the subject irritates me.

Honestly? If it wasn’t for his war hero status, I don’t think he’d be anywhere in politics.

  6. I agree with you that I’ve been disappointed with the McCain campaign. I think the party pushed him too far to the right and that he kind of lost his political voice along the way. I’m curious to see where the Republican party goes from here. Pragmatically, I know they can’t afford to lose the Latino vote to the Democrats, the way they have lost the Black vote. Otherwise, they will have a hard time ever winning a national election again.

  7. I’m not sure what happened to my other comment from earlier but I was curious if you had an interesting Halloween? Did you have a costume? Also wondered if you still had all your hair/braids? I guess it’s not getting any longer anymore?

  8. I’ve been a Mac user for years – wouldn’t change if someone paid me to do so.

Also, I’m in total agreement with you on the political front. I had to blog about it too, and I don’t usually blog about politics at all.

  9. Well as an Aussie I’m pleased to see Obama get in. I go by my gut feeling and I feel confident that Obama can do the job and do it well. I don’t know why but I keep thinking of him as another JFK. Let’s hope he doesn’t follow too closely in his footsteps.

Unfortunately every time I hear McCain’s name I keep hearing ‘Ahhhh … McCain. You’ve done it again’ LOL! It’s a tv advert for fish fingers that we have down here LOL! Anyway, congrats on the new prezzie. Let’s hope he can kick some serious butt!

    Cheers,
    Lyn

  10. November seems to be the comeback month for blogs. I updated mine too, after so long. 🙂

Completely agree with all that you said about McCain/Palin (God, I can’t stand that woman). As for Macs, they rule!

  11. Drew, I had to approve your other comment before it could show up (because of the link), and I didn’t get to it until just now. 🙂 I agree that McCain was better off not letting his party lead him too far to the right, but the Republican party in general is a bit messed up.

Mark, I’ve been using Apple products since the IIc (before Mac), so I hear you on that front. 🙂

Lyn, I know what you mean! H.E. is so afraid for Obama’s safety that he never watches his speeches live (in case something bad happens). We always end up recording it and watching it later, after we know he got through it OK.

Minn, hopefully we can keep it up!!! 😀

  12. I’m tossing up between a MacBook and the Vivienne Tan HP notebook (to double as an eBook, since it will cost about as much as an Iliad). My indecision is the only think keeping my bank balance healthy.

Have you read the Newsweek articles that talk about what went on behind the scenes of the campaign? I thought they were interesting, and now I see why you guys have such a protracted election campaign–it’s a test of whether or not your candidates can actually organise and lead people effectively.

(Side comment to Lyn: McCain reminds me of frozen pizza.)

  13. Cool. I wondered what happened to that comment. If you followed the link through, it actually even gave step by step pictures on how to create the double bun look. You could totally pull that hair style off too, without even cheating by using a wig. That’s making the safe assumption you still have braids you can sit on. Your trademark : )
