Over 15 years later…
Earlier this year I had the nicest surprise. One of my oldest friends Glenda contacted me out of the blue, having found my art site via Google. We’d been friends since I was about nine or ten years old, but we’ve lost touch for so many years; so it was like revisiting the past and my carefree childhood.
Anyway, a few days ago, Glenda sent me scans of some of my old sketches—godawful pencil drawings I did over 15 years ago at the tender age of 12. First of all, I was stunned and touched that she kept them at all, let alone for all these years. Second, I was aghast and embarrassed at the lack of skill with which these sketches were made.
I mean… look at these!!!
I can’t believe I let anyone, let alone one of my best friends, have these drawings. The proportions are all wrong, and I have no sense of space or form. Ack! I absolutely have to replace them, and I will, as soon as I can. [Glenda, that means I’m sending you new artwork.] In the meantime, please try not to think of the horrible sketches above. Instead, think of these, which are more recent:
I only wish I’d taken art classes. These might be better if I had. For now, I think I win the Most Improved award.

My dear little perfectionist, your old sketches merely reflect the enormous talent that was about to blossom over the years! 🙂
You rock.
Minnie… you are too awesome. 😀
The originals remind me of my own sketches — fashions, faces, some very good, most mere hints of what I was seeing in my mind’s eye.
The newer ones — pow! I really like the haircut on the first one, lol, and I’m shopping around for a good cut. The hands on the third one and her skrinchy nose are great.
I don’t think art school would have improved your ability to see so well — you’ve done great on your own!
Suzanne, I want to hug you. :o)
I remember your drawings. My brother looked up to you so much. He wanted to be able to draw just as good as you. He would stay up at night practicing so he could show you his artwork. I knew I could never be as artistically talented as you so I never tried. I still remember your signature for every piece. A little GEM…a garnet in fact…correct?
