Whew! As Paris Would Say, That’s Hawt
We had a bit of a heat wave over the weekend, and our place isn’t very good at keeping cool. When the air is still, the heat settles throughout the place, even downstairs where it should be cooler, but not by much.
I’m the sort of person with perennially cold hands and feet—or at the very least they’re sensitive to cold and get cold easily—but this weekend they remained the hottest parts of my body and could not get cool. I had to resort to washing my hands and feet to create some sort of evaporative cooling, and when that didn’t last long, I took out a blue ice pack from the freezer and hugged it close to me like it was my security blanket. When that was no longer cool, I swapped it for another blue ice pack, then again, and again. This continued all day as I applied it to my feet, my hands, my back, my shoulders, my neck, everywhere. And I was still hot.
Then I set up the vertical oscillating fan by my bedside so I’d get a nice regular breeze to alleviate my discomfort while I slept. It was still a little too hot for me, but the breeze made such a big difference anyway that when H.E. turned it off in the middle of the night, I woke up out of a sound sleep ten seconds later and turned it back on. I thought at the time that it had been off for hours, and I complained accordingly. H.E. had to explain to me that he had only just turned it off. I grumbled, tossed and turned a little, then went right back to sleep in the only just bearable heat.
Today was a little cooler, though. Thank heavens, too. I’m down to my last two popsicles, which I’ve also used to help cool me down. It’s also time to resume my housekeeping duties, which I’ve let lapse because I was too hot to do anything but stay still and pant.
What a way to start summer. I’m ready for fall.

Doesn’t sound good April. I can’t stand the heat. I just can’t function in it. I rarely even leave the house in Summer. Gone are the days of doing 2 day horse-riding clinics in 40 degree heat (sorry don’t know what that is in your language LOL!). Sending our Winter winds your way. Then again our Winter atm is averaging about 24 degree days. Niiiice! We’ve only just had a decent cold snap these last few days. Can’t say it’s as easy getting up for my walk at 5:45am any more 😉
For a native Pacific Islander, from a very hot humid climate (which I have visited several times) April has a very narrow 1 1/2 degree temperature comfort range, which I’m always attempting to provide, but usually don’t accomplish…She is like some exotic tropical fish…but a very cute one…
Lyn, the difference and conversion between Celsius and Fahrenheit have always been an obstacle to me. My mind is lazy and doesn’t like to think in numbers, so I’ll just take your word for it and assume 40 degrees is uber hot. All I know is that when I was in Oz, it was so hot and dry I could barely breathe sometimes, and laundry dried faster on the clothesline outside than in the machine dryer indoors. 🙂
And H.E., I am NOT a fish. 😀
It’s odd you talking about how hot it has been, when here in the midwest we have had one of the mildest summers I can ever remember. It’s hardly broken 90 all year and most days have been in the 70s or low 80s. I’ve only run my air for one weekend which is pretty much unheard of by now.
Any chance the hot weather will lead you to getting a shorter hair cut? I’m sure all that hair has to be hot even if you wear it up 90% of the time. I doubt it but thought I’d ask. No telling what someday may prompt you to cut it.
Any exciting 4th of July plans?
Drew, there was a heat wave here when I wrote this, and temperatures in some places got up to 116. As for my hair, I’m too lazy to do anything with it, even cut it. And here it is, 4th of July. H.E. has plans for our celebratory meals, but other than that, it’s whatever we feel like doing. 🙂
The heat has really turned up here the last few days, although not to that degree or level…but this is no dry heat as they say. Still if 116 heat won’t bring out the scissors I’m guessing the braid will not be shorn off anytime this year. A picture of the braids on the rare day you’re wearing it down would be cool to share though.
