Year 2007 in Review

Year 2007 in Review

I have failed utterly in my resolutions made a year ago.

I was supposed to have been on the treadmill at least 15 minutes of everyday, but that stopped after a while. I’d be faithful to it until my headaches kept me to the bed, and then when I got better I’d have a hard time getting back into the habit of it. But at least I found out this year that my headaches are actually allergies—sinuses acting up because of my environment.

I was supposed to have been sketching a still-life at least once a day. That one didn’t last very long. I’ve been sketching, but not nearly as frequently as that.

I started doing my easter eggs again in March, offering small prizes to those who participated, but I stopped again in August when people stopped solving them. There’s no pleasure in giving if no one takes pleasure in receiving. The last easter egg remains undiscovered somewhere in August.

I started doing new riddles around the same time as I started doing the easter eggs, called Familiar Unfamiliar. I stopped those, too.

However, I’ve discovered Scrabulous this year, and I’ve kept that up. I play myself, mostly, but I play anyone who challenges me on Facebook. It’s an alternative to the other word games I gave up here.

Speaking of words … I started writing them again in the name of fiction this year, and I haven’t kept it up as much as I should.

I’ve also started reading more again this year, with no specific goal in mind, and it’s been slow-going. I got my first e-book reader this summer, which I imagine will speed things up in the year to come. I’ve read somewhere around three dozen books this year, but only five of those are on my banned list. Additionally, I’ve collected about four more lists of recommended books to read.

I’ve started keeping track of my reading this year using my desk calendar, except during the month or two that it remained packed somewhere after the move. I’m still determined to read everything I haven’t read in my own library before culling my collection yet again, and I’ve started reviewing whatever print books (no e-books whatsoever!) that I read on GoodReads.

I’ve started reviewing movies again, too. I do it on Facebook now, and I do it only after I’ve seen a film from beginning to end.

I started posting my cover work on this blog, and I’ve kept it up somewhat, if not on a regular basis and if not as complete as it could be. I have no idea how much work I did this year, but I’ve filled up around 50 archive CDs with all my files from the PC this year (I haven’t archived the files on my Mac yet). If I average about four or five projects per CD, that’s over 200-300 projects—covers, ads, illustrations, or what have you—which should cover my original goal of completing at least one project a day, not counting weekends and a two-week vacation.

I was interviewed at least three or four times this year for my work, and I provided content for other people’s blogs.

I moved this year.

I didn’t travel.

I didn’t see any live shows (on stage).

I drove down to San Diego and visited family at least twice.

I drove up to Los Angeles with H.E. twice this year, too.

Wow. BORING year!

2008 will be better. That’s my resolution.

  1. HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Ah look. We can only do what we can do, eh? I think we load unnecessary pressure on ourselves. That’s why this year I want to get back to basics and keep things simple. However, I would like to become a little more environmentally conscious – grow our own veg, get a rainwater tank, use less utilities, walk into town rather than drive (takes 3 minutes in the car). That sort of thing.

Anyway, onwards and upwards I say! Have a great one 😀

  2. I’m very proud of you, and your work. My co-workers are really impressed. 50 CDs– that’s a lot. Everytime I look at a book store, I try to find your cover work, but you’ve made so many, I can’t remember them all. So, I’m looking for Lizard and Silver tear icons.

I think I can say that you did a lot except visit you family more last year, but, I’m being selfish. Hope to see more of you.

You forgot to mention your knitting projects.
    I love you.

  3. Thanks, Lyn! May you have a great year, too! 🙂

Mom, I love you, too, and I will try to visit more this year. Just let me know when you and B are free. 🙂 And you are right, I completely forgot about my crochet projects!

I think I did at least 6 scarves, 8 hats, 1 baby afghan, 1 blanket, and 1 cat afghan. I didn’t quite finish a lapghan, but I’m finishing up one now. I should probably keep better track of these…

  4. Have you tried Prolific? It’s my new addiction. And it’s easy to play with random people because you don’t have to take turns. I’m so bad, I’m dreaming about playing the game.

  5. Thanks to you, Kat, I am now incredibly addicted to Prolific and dream about playing the game, too. As soon as you mentioned it, I signed on to it and have already gone through 200 games. Ack!

  6. When you start recognising random players, that’s when you need to turn off the computer! LOL

  7. LOL, I’ll try to keep that in mind … when I’m not obsessing about playing just one more game.
