Latest Work, 2007 Week 47
It’s been a productive week, but I have only covers for Liquid Silver Books this time, as I haven’t heard back yet on any of the first drafts I sent for at least four Loose Id covers.
I love how quickly the LSB covers seem to go; I always feel I’m on a roll when I bang them out once or twice a day, which for some reason makes me work even harder and more efficiently. Of course, it helps that the authors deal with me directly and that they respond so promptly when I send them a draft.
It’s waiting for the feedback that usually kills my stride.

Love your work–especially love FEARLESS’ cover. Oh, my.
Darr
Thanks, Darr! 🙂
Here here! And lady, you’ve got Photoshopping down to an art. Gorgeous manips!
Thanks, Cris! 🙂 Not much manipulating on Fearless, though. I originally had the two characters on there, superimposed over the background, but the author preferred not to have the faces on there after all.
Everything else has been manipulated. Fearless is just straight graphic design.
Some great covers there April. I must ask how on earth you get a couple out in one day? It takes me at least a day to find suitable stock!
Thanks, Lyn! 🙂
Sometimes I’m lucky and find stuff right away (or maybe I’m just lazy and take the first thing I find that works). Sometimes I already have sizable lightboxes for each cover because of a not-so-productive week before, where all I did was search for photos. Sometimes I remember suitable photos from previous searches for other books (though never put into a lightbox). And sometimes I already HAVE the suitable photos, which somehow were never used or were rejected in previous projects (my favorite scenario of them all because it means I save a little money and time recycling photos I already bought and knocked out from their backgrounds).
Also, it helps that I no longer have a day job and do this full-time. It helps that I’m slightly obsessive-compulsive when I work, so that I sit at the computer until I complete a search. It helps to stumble on all the right keywords. And it helps that I’ve developed the rest of my workflow to be fairly quick and painless; the photo search is the hardest, most tedious part, as you’ve probably already discovered.
And a bonus? It helped that all but one of these was a sequel of some sort, so I already had the layouts ready from the previous covers. In some sequels, I may already have the photos, too, as I keep my lightboxes for as long as I can and some series have recurring main characters.
😉
Have a Happy Thanksgiving April!
Ugh! Keywords .. I can’t seem to think outside the box when it comes to these. I always seem to be doing the same searches. Hmm .. perhaps I should pull out my thesaurus LOL! Thanks for your reply. I’m glad it’s not just me who seems to spend SOOOo much time trawling through stock sites.
Thanks, JJ!!! 🙂 Happy Thanksgiving to you, too!
Lyn, I find the best place to mine keywords is in the cover request itself. 😉
Oooh thanks for that. I’ll give it a go.
With any luck, you’ll have seen this bit of feedback already — but Lindsey and I loved the cover for Yule…
Thanks, Jules! 🙂
