Hemispheric Warming
I love spring best. I’m no big fan of summer. This time of the year the days get hot, ninety degrees and up and dry, and my sinuses go crazy.
The unit where I live, especially in the room where my computer sits, is unbearable in a heat wave. Even with the windows open and the fans on, it’s hell. Monday, it was hell. First time this year, and I’m not looking forward to more as spring turns into summer. I always end up having to do my work early in the morning or late at night because any time in between is too uncomfortable. The heat settles on me and around me, and the pain starts creeping from the back of my head all the way through to my sinuses and down my neck and shoulders. My skin gets sticky. My mind goes blank. Hours pass by, and nothing gets done.
The best thing I can do in a situation like that is shut the computer off and lie in bed, in the coolest room in the place, reveling in the dancing dim leafy shadows of the tree outside the window and the slight breeze blowing in through the screen. I can do nothing when it’s that hot, except nap or catch up on my TV shows. Or dream of spring.
The heat broke today, thank God, so Monday’s freaky spring suffering is almost forgotten. But I’m dreading the coming of June and July. And August. The dog days of August are the worst. The Indian summer of September can be, too.
And then fall, which I love second best. I’m no big fan of winter.
