Self Portrait with Glasses and the Braid in a Bun
Doodles of mine like this one piss H.E. off because they’re not on proper paper. He hates when I draw on crappy scratch paper and is always on me about not using my store-bought sketchbooks, my pretty black hardbound art books full of super white acid-free paper, most of them so woefully blank.
But I really couldn’t help it this time. The paper where this doodle lives is actually one of my three to-do lists, which are always so handily on my desk, right under my nose. And when there’s a sharpened pencil nearby, really … can anyone help it?

Another very successsful aritst (Writer) got her groove on while writing on anything she could find. Now the wealthiest woman in Great Britain, JK Rowling probably still writes anywhere and everywhere.
That’s exactly how I remember seeing you at Providence airport for the first time. In glasses and the braid in a bun. I was struck dumb by your beautiful hair and your skill with styling it. I remember giving you the Gatorade and just blinking at your bun in admiration. 😉
Cool… but isn’t it about time we saw the hair down in a photo? (Thought I’d post this before Drew did!)
Broch, good point! I’ll remember that when H.E. scolds me about the paper again. 😉
Minnie, lol. You’re so sweet, I hate to break this to you, but my hairdo requires absolutely no skill — it’s simply a braided ponytail wrapped around itself, and every time I wrap it, H.E. makes the sound of a lawnmower engine or outboard motor starting up.
JJ, is it time? Really? Sigh. Guess I’ll have to buy myself the camera remote soon then.
Actually i thought the background copy on the paper added to the self portrait aspect.
I’m gearing up to watch the final episode of The Office for the year but had to comment on your sketch. It’s a rare sketch of ‘the bun’. How many wrap arounds do you make to form ‘the bun’? Is this your standard look (glasses and bun) now? Or do you have contacts too?
How come you wear your hair down in a braid and double loop it? This would keep it from being long enough to sit on or keep it from getting caught in doors, etc. How long does the braid reach when hanging down your back now? I assume when it’s loose it’s still around knees?
And of course the important questions…will Michael leave the Scranton Branch (no way…it’s got to be Karen that gets the job)? Will Jim talk to Pam about her speech from last week (hell, yes)?
Drew … I had to do as the Tootsie Roll owl did and reenact the deed to answer your question. I wrap the braid four times around the top end to make the bun, and yes, it’s pretty much my standard look. 🙂 I do have contacts and have worn them from time to time (throughout my Oz trip and Janine’s wedding, for instance), but ever since the contact lens fluid scare and recall, I’ve given my contact lenses a long leave of absence.
I wear the braid in a bun because it keeps the hair out of my way — very convenient, and yes, it keeps me from sitting on it or having it fall in my soup or something equally unpleasant. The braid goes somewhere below my butt when it’s loose, and when there’s no braid at all, the hair falls somewhere around or below my knees.
As for The Office, my thoughts are along the same lines as yours. 🙂
And no plans for a haircut anytime soon? I’m surprised that you don’t trim your hair so that you can wear it down in a braid and you don’t sit on it. Or wear the double braid down and keep it the current length.
The Office was pretty good last night although not might favorite. A nice change of pace with Ryan getting the job in corporate. I hope that Karen stays on the show as well.
