Work in Progress: Seducing the Hermit

Work in Progress

This is what I’m working on right now—a cartoon cover for Suz deMello’s Seducing the Hermit. The hermit is the hero of the book. He’s the one being run over by the heroine driving the Volkswagen bug. Only twice have I seen this technique work—that is, this technique of running down with your car the person of your desire.

Once was in another book, only I can’t remember offhand which book it was. The heroine is rushing somewhere, to a company meeting or interview, I think, and the hero is in a hurry while driving his car. She seems to come out of nowhere as he’s turning a corner, and he hits her. They are the primary characters in a romance novel, and this is how they first meet, so of course, they end up living happily ever after.

Another time was in the sitcom The Class. At the start of the season, the redheaded Richie Velch runs over Lina Warbler, breaking all the bones in both of her feet, and somehow they end up together towards the end of the season.

So apparently, this works as a way of matchmaking.

The driver and the pedestrian, however, cannot already be married and trying to get back together. In such cases, the one who gets hit usually dies, and the one driving usually gets convicted of murder or manslaughter. Seriously. I saw it on the news somewhere.
