Some Covers

Some Covers

I haven’t updated my work site in a while and probably won’t be doing so for a while yet, as I need to rethink its presentation. H.E. doesn’t think I should display my latest work on there; instead, I should pick 10 of my best pieces and display those only.

As if I could determine on my own which 10 of the hundreds that I’ve done actually look decent.

And I can’t.

Even if I stick with choosing among my personal favorites, I can’t. I just don’t know any better. The covers I hate, people like. The covers I like, people barely even notice. The covers I worked really hard to make and those that are a good display of my skills, some people see as simple and straightforward. The covers that took absolutely no time or skill on my part, some people find dazzling and awe-inspiring.

And this is just among the readers and authors of the genre. People outside the genre and industry look at covers and book design in such a completely different way, I can’t even begin to understand what they would like or dislike among my work.

I know this because I’ve been reading reviews on covers and book design for a little while now, and sometimes, I just don’t get it. I’ll look at something and find it crappy in composition, color, and general look, but they’ll be all agog over it. Or I’ll look at something and find it really beautiful and pleasing, but they’ll crap all over it.

It’s enough to make me sigh.

Anyway, since I’m no longer posting my latest work on my work site, here are just some of the covers I’ve been working on—just so they can at least be seen.

  1. I’m hesitant to say which one I like best after that! 😉 Okay, I’m taking the plunge…Secrets in the Annex, you did a great job catching the mood of that one!
