The Pinnacles Desert
On my third full day in Perth, I took a second full day tour. It stopped for a bit at Caversham Wildlife Park, so I have some photos of me feeding and petting a kangaroo, cradling a coarse-haired wombat in my lap, and petting a sleepy koala. Then it was a lot of driving, a lunch in Cervantes, and a lot more driving, until we came to Nambung National Park, home of the Pinnacles.
It was hot there and bright, the puffy white clouds so blindingly white. I nearly had a heatstroke and lost my group walking across some of it, but I couldn’t stop taking photos. It was beautiful, but believe me, you do not want to get lost there. And flies. The flies are annoying; they made me wish I had bought an expensive hat I’d seen in a souvenir shop in downtown Perth, with pieces of cork hanging from strings along the brim. Or a fly net. I should have brought a fly net. As it was, I found myself constantly doing the Australian salute.
Anyway, the Pinnacles were kind of cool. I think some of my best pictures in the entire trip were taken there. The guide encouraged us to look at each pinnacle with imagination and see what we could see. I saw a couple with a newborn, a kangaroo, and an elephant, and the guide made sure he pointed out a particular rock formation to me, and when I saw it, I laughed out loud and said, “Oh, my! That’s a great rocketship!”
And yes, I know. It doesn’t really look like rocketship. It looks more like a silo.
Anyway, here’s another photo of the Pinnacles, this time with my godmother in the shot:
After the Pinnacles, the day was only half over. The best part was yet to come.

Rocketship indeed! 🙂 Loving the photos.
lol, Zee, thanks! I think you’ll like the next set even better. 😉
These are awesome! I love the first photo. Could you include the photo with the wombat and the koala? I’d like to see it too!
You don’t have any photos here of the wildlife park included.
I can’t get over how blue the sky looks.
Thanks again for sharing.
I’ll edit the post in a minute or two to include links to the photos of me with the wombat and the kangaroo. But the one of me with the koala isn’t as good — too many eucalyptus leaves to show my hand actually on the koala.
I didn’t post them originally, only because they’re not great photos, and I’ll have to crop them now to fix the composition a little bit. My godmother was new to my camera.
As for none of the wildlife park being posted at all … heck, I didn’t post much of my first full day in Perth, either, lol. I took a lot in Kings Park and downtown. I’ll probably get to them all later. 🙂
And the sky? It was so very, very blue, the sun so very, very bright. The clouds came from the cyclone up north and made the sky even prettier.
Bob LaBlaw, Bob LaBlaw…just post them already.
They’ve been up, lol. Just click the links. 😉
Doh! Heehee! Had NO idea that wombats were that humongous. He looks like a big, fat, uncomfortable, hairy baby. Sort of like a few kids I know around my ‘hood.
Some awesome pix there. The colors really “pop” in the top one. I’ve always wanted to visit Australia and NZ.
I also thought wombats were much smaller.
Oh, yeah. That wombat was pretty big and heavy, and so lethargic it was like trying to carry a sleepy fat toddler. Its hair was so coarse, too — not at all soft and fuzzy as the little wombat stuffed toy I got H.E. from another zoo in another city … which reminds me, Zee, I need to package up the things I got for you and send it post mail.
JJ, The colors in the top one is true to life — I didn’t tweak it at all in Photoshop except to sharpen it a little after resizing. The atmosphere is so clear there that all the colors looked super saturated. In some of the other shots, the sand and pinnacles look even more gold, it’s amazing.
Thanks for sharing the extra photos. The wombat did not look anything like I was expecting. It was huge! Is it a marsupial?
Was the wombat heavy? You are so brave. Even though I adore koalas and kangaroos and find them cute to look at, I’d not have the nerve to pet them. I have heard so much about their aggressive nature… Plus I am a wuss. Remember all my phobia posts? 🙂
The photos are very beautiful. When Alex and I finally go to Oz, I am going too take sightseeing tips and advice from you. 🙂
Did you bring back any stuffed koalas for yourself?
Drew, yep. Wombats are marsupials. 🙂
Minnie, yes, the wombat weighed about as much as a sleepy child — dead weight. Koalas and wombats tend to be lethargic and slow-moving, though, so I wouldn’t worry about aggressive behavior from them much. Kangaroos, well, so long as you go to a zoo to pet them and don’t pet the wild ones, I think you’ll be okay. 🙂
And nope. I didn’t bring back any stuffed koalas for myself, but I did get a bear wearing an outfit similar to one I wore later in the trip. More on that later. 😉
