It’s a Big World Out There
I’m leaving the country tomorrow. Not that I’ve committed a crime and am on the lam or anything. It’s just that I’m going to Australia to visit my godmother.
I’ve told only a few people so far because the trip has been in the works off and on since November, and I’m the sort of person who won’t hope or look forward to anything because I’m so afraid of disappointment.
But I’m going, and there’s no turning back. I’ll be offline for two weeks.
Cousin Zee has asked me to find her a didgeridoo, and I’ll give it a shot if I can fit one in my suitcase or send it from there. I’d also like to get a boomerang for H.E.; I already have two of my own here, gifts from my godmother from a couple of decades ago, and I’ve seen him admiring them with envy.
My main mission, however, is to have a fun, rich experience and to take a lot of photos. H.E. insists upon it. He got me a brand new 2 GB media card so that I wouldn’t have any excuses about saving digital space. Now I have a total of 3 GB, about 1600 high resolution images—that’s about 160 photos a day. I have no excuses at all.
I won’t say here specifically where I’m going because I want whatever photos I take and post to be a surprise. It’s a big, big country down there, and I’m going to only a few of its cities.
It’s something like a 14- or 15-hour flight, but I will lose an entire day flying there, and I will travel back in time while flying back, arriving home earlier than the time I leave Australia. So I’ll get to time travel again. The last time I did that was when I took a trip to South Korea, and even though I didn’t get to change the course of history, man, was that a thrill.
I’m excited about the trip and the photo opportunities, and I’m scared I’ll forget something—my passport, my luggage, my head.
I had planned on posting ahead so that this journal would publish something new each day while I was away; I had even planned on seeking out net cafés and posting updates, but it’s been so low volume in posts and comments that I figured, “Why bother?” I will focus my attention entirely to Oz.
Photo above is of the Huntington Beach pier. A very high percentage of my photos are of Huntington Beach—sunsets, stormy skies, surf, sand, oil rigs, lifeguard stations, surfers, palm trees, sea gulls, etc. I’m so glad I get to shoot something new; I was starting to get bored.

Wow! This sounds awesome. One of my co-workers has talked about wanting to go to Australia after she retires (which is probably 5 years away). I don’t know if she’ll go but the idea is exciting. I’ve never traveled abroad. I was just snow skiing two weeks ago at Keystone in Colorado and got to talking on a bus with a girl that was from Adelaide. It’s just to the west of Melbourne by a few hours. I hope you go to Sydney as well. I don’t know a lot of the landmarks but the Great Barrier Reef would be one! I also know there is some site on the coast that they call the 7 pillars (7 may not be the right number though) and it’s rocks that are in the ocean and the remnants of the old coast line that been eroded away.
Well, have fun then. You will have to tell us all about your adventures! Too bad that you aren’t going to be posting updates while gone.
Be safe and have fun!
I move to Melbourne in June to attend school there. I loved the laid-back atmosphere of Australia. It’s so different from the states and so much safer feeling. You’ll love it! Have a great trip!
Have lots of fun, sweetie! I am glad I got to talk to you before you left. 🙂
Can’t wait to see the photos. Send me a postcard?
Have a bonzer time down-under little Sheila… [poor attempt at Aussie slang]
I’ve always wanted to go to Australia, but then again I’ve always wanted to go to Redwood Nattional Forest [I should start here, aye?]
Have a wonderful trip April, and take many photos!
Have a safe trip, it sounds like fun!
Remember to pack your camera. :p
