Happy Thanksgiving from California

Happy Thanksgiving from California

Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. May you all have a good and safe holiday. 🙂

Here are a couple of Thanksgiving conversations for you:

H.E.: [My stepfather’s] mother made the best apple strudel.
April: What did you call her? Grandmother?
H.E.: I called her Großmutter (Grossmutter).
April: Grossmutter? Is that like fat mother?
H.E.: It means grandmother, not fat mother.
April: Okay, well. Gross in French means fat.
H.E.: Yes, dear. That’s why we call it German.

Later, while shopping…

April: (pointing to a can) Look, how redundant. “Tiny Shrimp.” As opposed to the oxymoron “Jumbo Shrimp.”
H.E.: There’s all kinds of shrimp. Tiny, medium, deveined (pronounces it “divined”).
April: (espies the deveined shrimp) Deveined? You mean deveined (pronounces it “devained”)?
H.E.: That’s what I said.
April: No, you said divined, not deveined. You did!
H.E.: That’s because deveined shrimp is divine.
