The Luck of the Irish vs. Irish Luck
H.E. is Irish, and because 2005 has been such a difficult year for him, I’ve learned a very harsh lesson about the difference between the luck of the Irish and Irish luck.
Now, the two may sound the same, but they’re not. Absolutely not.
The luck of the Irish is Ned Divine finding out that he has won the lottery. Irish luck is Ned Divine dying of shock right after winning the lottery.
I saw Dodgeball on TV over the weekend, so here’s another example: Patches O’Houlihan, played by Rip Torn, gave the underdog dodgeball team the luck to win. Even the ESPN 8 broadcaster in the movie said as much, right before the scene where a huge and heavy Las Vegas sign reading “The Luck of the Irish” falls from the ceiling to flatten and kill dear old Patches.
Yeah. That’s Irish luck.
I have no idea if these are actual definitions, but this is pretty much how H.E. has laid it out for me, and I’m inclined to believe it.
But I’m full of Filipino superstitions. I’ll believe anything.

I found that one doesn’t have to be Irish to have Irish Luck of luck!
after a week of rains in here New England, I thought that I’d escape my basement flooding.
wrong-o!
Luck of the Irish: My insurance company finally paying for the electrical damage to my car, after it being in the shop for over 3 months.
Irish Luck: Picking up my car from the shop and having the exact same problem half-way to work.
Yikes, Parl and Broch! Here’s to hoping for better luck for the both of you.
