My Super Hero Power
When asked what my super hero power would be, if I could have one, I would normally answer with flight—the kind of flying that Superman and Peter Pan do, unaided, unfettered, and easy as pie. It’s a superpower with which I am fairly comfortable, as I often flew in my nightly dreams when I was a kid. In fact, for a long time, I was almost completely certain that I’d be pretty good at it, what with all the practice that I got in my dreams; it was usually easier for me to fly than to walk or run.
Now that I’m a little older, though, I’ve been reconsidering my choice of superpower. Flying is useful, in its own little way, but I think I would have to keep such a talent to myself, lest I risk being outcast like The Boy Who Could Fly, and to keep it hidden I would have to fly on the sly, in the dead of the night while everyone slept… or very furtively behind buildings and tall trees so that no one can see. But that’s just no fun at all.
So what I’d like my superhuman power to be is this—to be able to see in the fourth dimension at will. If the third dimension is space, then the fourth dimension is time, and the ability to see in the fourth dimension means being able to see frontwards and backwards in time.
I mean, I would love to be able to look at a person and see who they truly are, from their infancy to their old age. I could then see the sort of progression their life takes, whether or not they have made something good out of what they were given and whether or not they lose all their hair and teeth at a certain age.
I would love to be able to look at a company and see if they will do well in a year or two, or maybe even ten. I could then see whether or not it’s worth buying their stock and keeping it, or whether or not I should avoid them at all cost.
I would love to be able to look at a house that I am thinking of buying and see if it stays there through time, sturdy and unbothered by wildfires or mudslides.
What a useful little power, seeing something in the fourth dimension. Definitely better than flight, I’d say, and much more practical.

Never underestimate the power of persuasion…a little wave of the hand…and voila, you have some good old-fashioned jedi mind tricks. Yep, that one’s for me.
Oh, I have that one already. A slight movement or sound, and immediately H.E. makes me breakfast, gives me a back rub, or drives me places. 😉
Hmmm, the force is strong with you!
I don’t know– seeing into the fourth dimension sounds good… at first. But wouldn’t you either be:
Sticking yourself with the knowledge that fate (or future) is predetermined, and therefore the concept of free will is lessened?
or else
Relying on potentially-flawed information?
I don’t know… but I suspect that being able to see the past or the future might be one of those "curse-disguised-as-a-blessing" things…
Good point, Kim!
But I was thinking more along the lines of maybe seeing someone as a whole (who and what they were, as well as who and what they could be) instead of just who and what they are right now.
For instance, without it, you could meet a very righteous and religious person and not even know they were once or twice convicted of a crime before they found God. Or, you could buy a beautiful house and not even know that people were murdered in it.
Not that I wouldn’t consider it a curse if it gave me awful images I could probably be better off not knowing…
…but that’s why I added "at will" to it. I’d only want to see into the fourth dimension when I want to have the extra information at hand.
Hmmm, so I guess my desire to have x-ray vision to see women naked seems kinda childish.
As for the power to see in the 4th dimension, I can see how that would work for the past, It has happened, but for the future, wouldn’t you need to be able to see all possible outcomes? Ouch, my head is hurting now just thinking about it.
But I do like the power of persuasion/suggestion.
X-ray vision, hmmm….
Would that work on those scratch-off lottery tickets?
No super powers for me, thanks. I’m sure I’d just ruin everything.
Just for the record, that flying stuff is just special affects. Superman can not fly. He is able to jump over tall buildings. You can watch him jump out of windows. And if you pay attentions (to the original tv shows), when he lands there is always a loud THUMP! 🙂
At first, I thought of flying, invisibility, or mind-reading as good powers. Then, I used to think teleporting would be the best power. You could get into or out of any situation. Now, I have to go with persuasion/suggestion. The “curse” of this power could be avoided if you could turn it on and off or know when you are using it. Another fun way to think about powers is to limit them in some way. You can only use it a limited number of times a day or even limited days per year. You can’t use it on everyone or use it limited numbers of times on each person.
